Up or Down: Thoughts on Where the Market is Going

in Finance/Investing by

It’s really hard to know what the next right move is. On one hand, things seem to be going well, and the charts are pointing upwards. This is nice to see, but how long can it last when the markets continue to reach new highs?  Keep Reading

Why Don’t We Talk About Money

in Finance by

We talk about EVERYTHING ELSE. Why don’t we talk about money? The answer is actually so obvious, it’s just f*cking stupid. We don’t talk about money because as a society, we ascribe value to people based on their financial worth.

PERSONAL FINANCE 101: TOP 5 TAKEAWAYS

Last Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of hosting a personal finance workshop for Ladies Get Paid, a New York-based but nationwide organization focused on helping women find career and financial success, at San Francisco’s GitHub headquarters. I’m pleased to say that the event made for a very engaging and interesting discussion on how different people manage their money, what their perceptions of the stock market are, and the various approaches to investing, whether through work in a 401k or directly through the stock market.

Setting *My* Financial Goals

in Investing by

During the Q&A at the most recent Discussing Finance event held at Unbounce, the most common answer from the panelists was, “well it depends on your financial goals.” This answer was given to nearly every question asked regarding savings vs. investment, how much to save, how much to invest, what kinds of investments are best to get into, etc, etc. My impression is that because the tools most commonly discussed, RRSP and TFSA accounts, basically have one-size-fits-all recommendations (use them! Much like our careers, each person’s financial path and strategy is completely different from the next.

In order to determine what to do with your finances and how to create a personalized financial plan, you must start by defining your goals. What is most important to you? What you want to do with your money will determine your savings and investment strategy.  Keep Reading

What TFSAs are Actually For

in Investing by

Let’s start with what they’re not for: parking cash and looking for interest. It seems, because of the misleading name of the TFSA, tax-free savings account, that many people think it is an account best used to save money and accrue interest. While some banks will provide a high(ish) interest rate for cash in a TFSA, the reality is that this is far less than even a conservative investment in an ETF or mutual fund. Keep Reading
