My Favourite Weekend Routine

in Blog by

I guess it’s a bit obvious isn’t it, I love to paper and coffee, but nonetheless, here we go.

Saturday:

Wake up around 8am and walk the one block to JJ Bean for the good muffins and americanos with Duchess. She takes awhile to get up though…

Walk the dog. Duchess does a good run around the sea wall in Yaletown in False Creek. She goes off leash and is very well behaved for the most part; when we’re in public she’s fantastic, greeting people and listening very well. It’s when we’re home that she’s a monkey, climbing up on things and barking at the door. (Anyone know how to make this stop??)

Yoga. On the weekends my studio offers an extended power class on Saturday mornings and it is such a nice, productive, and meditative way to start the day. I can feel the planks well into dinner.

Pick up more coffee, maybe flowers, and sometimes a Saturday newspaper. On my way home from yoga I’ll usually stop at Starbucks as there’s one right across the street from the studio, and get a tall pike roast in the large cup so there’s room for cream without dumping out coffee. Even though I never actually finish a coffee… I’m so pleased that the fancy grocers in my neighbourhood (meaning $2.50 avocados and $6 loaves of bread), carry the Wall Street Journal and the Times – on Saturday I go for the Journal.

Laze on the couch and read the paper. Snap an instagram or two, cuddle the dog. Papers are no small commitment, there’s at least a few hours of entertainment in there. Listen to some favourite songs, like this, and this.

Make brunch. Usually avocado toast with a tomato and fried egg and some fresh fruit. Keep reading.

Do a bit of work. I do freelance marketing, so there is always work to be done, whether it’s client work or for myself as a freelancer. There’s also the next Discussing Finance event to be planned, and of course content for The Paper & Coffee! Which often comes from doing paper and coffee.

If it’s nice out, take Duchess to the dog park. There are a few great ones around us, and Duchess loves to run around with all of the other dogs, regardless of size.

Laze about some more and maybe get through another section of the paper… Scroll through twitter even though there’s a new paper sitting in my lap. So guilty of this. Twitter is my new favourite (again).

Enjoy a nice dinner out, or stay in. Go to bed early-ish. 🙂

Sunday:

Pretty much a repeat of Saturday except I exclusively read The New York Times on Sunday, and can end up spending the entire day (save for dog walks and morning yoga again), in bed with the Sunday edition. It may take several cups of french press coffee. It’s a particularly beautiful paper; there are just so many great sections on Sunday, like the Business section, Sunday Review, Sunday Styles, and there are two magazines that come with it. The whole thing just makes me so happy and has become a cherished ritual.

Happy weekending!
